With a spotlight on Mercer County, the chart above displays the distribution of the net percent change of real (inflation adjusted) personal income across North Dakota's 53 counties over the period 2000-2016.
Those counties whose real personal income growth registered above the statewide average over this period realized an increase in their statewide share of real personal income. Likewise, those counties whose real personal income growth registered below the statewide average experienced a decline in their relative share of real personal income statewide.
Statewide Snippets:
  • Over 2000-2016 real personal income grew in fifty-one North Dakota counties while declining in two.
  • Real personal income growth in eleven counties outpaced the statewide average (77.61%), while growth in forty-two counties trailed.
  • At the extremes of the distribution, McKenzie County posted the highest growth of real personal income (299.97%), while Hettinger County placed last by logging a -11.64% decline.
  • The spread in real personal income growth between the highest (McKenzie County, 299.97%) and lowest (Hettinger County, -11.64%) over 2000-2016 equated to 311.62% ( = 299.97%-11.64%).
